Ahsoka Tano's Silhouette Before a Misty Ruined City — Print & Oil Painting

The same subject from behind, and painted in a much higher key. The mist here is bright rather than heavy, pale lilac and bone-white, and it swallows the top two-thirds of the canvas, leaving the wreckage in the distance as a set of faint vertical scars rather than a shape you can name.

Ahsoka stands at the centre with her back to us, hooded, the cloak falling to her heels in one dark mass. She is the darkest object in the picture, which in a composition this light is the same as putting a spotlight on her. Two rows of helmets run away from her feet down either side of a low ridge, each on its staff, each catching a little orange along the crown.

Those orange markings are the detail worth stopping on: the company painted their helmets to echo the markings on her own face, and the artist has kept just enough of that colour on every one for the row to read as a line of small warm points in an otherwise cold picture.

Where the companion canvas is heavy and ashen, this one is almost weightless, the difference between standing in the smoke and standing in the light afterwards. The receding perspective does most of the emotional work: the graves have a vanishing point, and she is standing at the near end of it.
