Ahsoka Tano Faces a Field of Trooper Helmets — Print & Oil Painting

A wide, almost colourless landscape, and a field of helmets on poles. They stand at uneven heights across the whole width of the canvas, each one a clone trooper helmet set on a thin staff driven into the ash, some upright, some tilted, receding until the haze takes them. In the middle distance, small and alone, a figure in a pale cloak stands between them.

Ahsoka is painted at perhaps a twentieth of the canvas height. Her hood is down, the montrals and head-tails clearly drawn, and the cloak hangs straight: no wind, no drama, just someone standing still in the middle of a burial ground. Behind her the wreck of something very large lies broken into the mist, more suggested than described.

The palette has been drained to almost nothing: grey-brown ash, pale smoke, a colourless sky. The only warmth in the picture is the orange of her skin, and at that scale it registers as a single small mark. The artist has made the one living thing in the image also the smallest thing in it.

The event behind this needs no embellishment. When the order came, the men she had fought beside turned on her; the ones who fell were buried, and each grave was marked with the helmet of the man in it.
