Ahsoka Tano Grips Her Staff Before a Looming Ship — Print & Oil Painting

Painted in the flat, clean manner of the animated series, with smooth surfaces, no visible brushwork and colour laid in broad even fields, and composed almost entirely out of white.

Ahsoka stands centre, in a pale hooded cloak whose peak has been cut and shaped to sit over her montrals rather than crushing them. The head-tails hang forward over both shoulders in their grey-blue and white banding, and the cloak falls to the ground in long straight folds. Her face is the only warm colour on the canvas: orange skin, the white markings across the brow and cheeks, and a mouth set flat.

In her right hand she holds a tall thin staff, taller than she is, finished at the top with an open ring. It runs from her hand to the top edge of the frame as the single hard vertical in a picture otherwise made of curves and haze.

Behind her a very large dark hull curves across the whole width of the background, close enough that its edge is out of focus and far too big to fit in the frame. Above it a band of white light burns out completely. The artist has given the ship no detail at all: no panels, no markings, no scale references. It stays a mass rather than a machine.

Everything about the staging is arrival rather than action: she is standing still, dressed for travel, holding a walking staff instead of a weapon. Part of our Star Wars collection, alongside the white blades raised in mist and the walk past a wrecked Star Destroyer.
