About this artwork
A night action piece, and unusually generous with detail for one. The trooper holds the centre in a low braced stance, turned towards the right of the frame, firing one hand blaster while the second is already levelled beneath it. The muzzle of the upper weapon has blown out into a small blue star, and it is the brightest point on the canvas.
The kit has been painted item by item. Phase II plate in white with blue panels at shoulder, forearm and knee; a grey pauldron over one shoulder and a short kama hanging from the belt with a blue band at its hem; a thin rangefinder stalk standing up above one ear; two long tan cylinders strapped diagonally across the back; pouches and a spare weapon holstered at the hip. Everything is scuffed and nothing is illegible.
The fight around him is described entirely in coloured lines. Blue bolts come in from the upper left and from behind him, green ones cross from the right, and each is drawn as a hard-edged bar rather than as a glow. Three more troopers stand further back, small and rim-lit, and above them the hull of a downed craft cuts a dark diagonal across the top left corner.
The strangest touch is at the bottom. The ground he is braced on is not rock but a tangle of dark curling tendrils tipped in magenta, crowding in from both lower corners. The battlefield is somebody's undergrowth, and nobody in the picture has the time to look at it.
