Boba Fett fights with the sarlacc — Print & Oil Painting

The camera has been put on the ground and pointed up, which turns a scramble into a monument. Two thirds of the frame is clean blue sky, the horizon sits at the ankles, and the armoured figure is lifted into open air with nothing behind him.

The creature is never shown. Four thick tentacles arch into the picture from below and from both edges, tan and grey, ringed like a worm along their whole length, one curling past his knee and another crossing the lower left corner. Sand boils up between them in a wall of pale dust.

Both hands are working. The right holds a long rifle levelled downward with the muzzle flash blooming white against the dust. The left is thrown up and open above the helmet, and a short cylinder banded in red has just left the fingertips, still turning, a fraction of a second from going off.

The armour is painted with real affection: the dented green helmet with its red brow markings and folded rangefinder, the ochre pauldron, the grey cuirass with its dark emblem, the braided cords at the shoulder, and the jetpack throwing a short white flame that answers the flash from the rifle.

Painting the pit as nothing but reach is faithful to how it was filmed, and it also makes the point of the whole episode: whatever is down there kept him for a while and did not keep him. Part of our Star Wars collection, alongside a second pass at the same fight and the jetpack studied on its own.
