About this artwork
The companion to the other sheet in this series, built on the same wall and lit by the same gold, but where that one is about a body, this one is entirely about equipment. The figure stands in profile facing right, and the measured saturation is the highest of any painting in the group.
The helmet reads as a ledger of damage. Olive-green over the dome and cheeks, maroon across the face plate, and everywhere the paint has been knocked back to bare metal along the ridges and around the visor. The rangefinder stands upright on its arm at the side of the head. Nothing about the surface is uniform, and no two dents are painted the same way.
The jetpack takes up almost as much of the frame as the man. A tall cone-tipped rocket stands vertically at its centre with cylindrical tanks flanking it in rust, brass and worn olive, and a thick corrugated hose loops down from the pack across his back. Below, the chest plate, the ammunition strapped across the torso, the gauntlet and a weapon at the hip are all rendered in the same chipped, oxidised finish.
The wall behind carries the identical field of painted marks and symbols as the sheet beside it, and the light picks out the gold in everything: armour, rust, plaster and hose alike. The effect is deliberate: a man made almost entirely of salvage, photographed as though he were treasure.
It belongs to our Star Wars collection, near the other sheet from the same set and the helmet studied on its own in a smoky hold.
