C-3PO Stands Alone Amid the Tatooine Dunes — Print & Oil Painting

A very wide canvas given over almost entirely to dunes and weather. The sand runs in long soft ridges from the bottom edge back to a horizon set low in the frame, and above that horizon two-thirds of the picture is a heavy bank of lilac-grey cloud with no break in it.

The droid stands in the middle distance, dead centre, at perhaps a fortieth of the canvas height: gold, upright, arms held slightly away from the body in that permanent attitude of mild alarm. He casts one short shadow. There are no tracks behind him, no structures, and nothing else in the frame at any distance.

The tonal range has been kept deliberately narrow: the whole picture sits in pale ochre, sand and mauve, with contrast so low that the dunes nearly merge into the sky. That flatness is what gives the small gold figure its force; he is the only saturated thing in a canvas of washed-out colour.

He was built for etiquette and translation, in a place with nobody to translate for. The saga's first act begins with two droids landing on this planet and walking away from each other in different directions, and this is the one who chose wrong.
