R2-D2 Wanders a Moonlit Alien Landscape — Print & Oil Painting

A tall canvas in which the droid is neither the largest nor the brightest thing, and the artist has clearly decided that is the correct arrangement. He stands a third of the way up the frame on a pale dusty track, three-quarters on and facing left, both outer legs planted and the centre foot down. Everything else is landscape and sky.

The sky takes the top half. Two moons hang in it: a large one at the upper left, cratered and lit from the side into a fat crescent, and a much smaller one lower down and further left, thin and pale. Between and above them the blue runs from near-black at the crown of the canvas to a soft indigo at the horizon, powdered with stars. Rock spires push up into it, black and jagged, and more rock frames the picture down both edges.

Against all that cold, the droid is painted warm-white and silver. His dome carries the blue panels and the small radial slots, and two indicator lamps are lit on the front of it, one red and one blue, the only saturated points anywhere in the image. His shell is scuffed and dust-caked around the feet, and the shadow he casts is short and hard.

In the middle distance to the right sits a large slab-sided tracked machine, brown with rust, with a few lit windows along one flank and a small figure or two beside it. It is well away from him and he is not moving toward it. Somebody is going to find him out here, and the picture is painted at the last quiet moment before that happens.
