Darth Maul Wields His Saber in the Theed Palace — Print & Oil Painting

Maul in a corridor of warm stone, caught mid-stride, holding the double-bladed hilt level at hip height with both blades lit and running straight off the left and right edges of the canvas. He is walking, not lunging. The weapon is simply out.

The setting is unusually warm for this character. Ochre and rose sandstone, square pilasters marching away behind him, a floor smooth enough to throw back a soft reflection of the blades. Against that, the black robe reads almost as a cut-out, and the tattooed face is the only other red in the picture that is not plasma.

The costume is painted plainly: heavy black robes with the hood down, gloves, a wide sash at the waist. The horns catch a little of the ambient warmth along their upper edges, which stops the head from flattening into a shape and keeps it three-dimensional.

The weapon is the reason this figure landed as hard as it did: the moment the saga first showed a lightsaber built to burn at both ends, held by someone who had clearly been trained to use it that way. The artist has understood that the hilt, not the face, is the subject.
