Darth Maul Grips His Double-Bladed Lightsaber — Print & Oil Painting

A single figure, painted from the waist up, holding the double-bladed hilt horizontally across his body with both blades lit and running clean off either edge of the canvas. That unbroken red line is the composition: it cuts the picture in half and gives him a bar to stand behind.

The head is where the detail has gone. Red skin divided into symmetrical black fields, the crown of short horns, and yellow eyes ringed in red set under a heavy brow. He is turned slightly away and looking down and to one side rather than at the viewer, the expression of someone tracking something that has not arrived yet.

Behind him the interior is deliberately vague: pale horizontal strips of light a long way back, a haze of smoke, the dark mass of some large structure. The palette is unusually restrained for this character: steel greys and blue-black for the architecture, black for the robes, and the red kept entirely for his face and his weapon.

The title sets him opposite Ahsoka Tano, but the canvas keeps only him, mid-turn, with the weapon already open at full length. Painted this way the piece is about anticipation rather than contact, and the horizontal blade reads less like a guard than like a line drawn across a room.
