Darth Maul Strikes Down Qui-Gon Jinn in the Reactor Shaft — Print & Oil Painting

The killing has been painted small. The artist has pulled the camera high and back, so that the two figures occupy perhaps a tenth of the canvas and the rest is given to the machine they are standing inside: a vast curved gallery of grey plate, ringed walkways, and tall white light strips running floor to ceiling.

The style is flat and graphic: broad blocked shapes, almost no blending, and detail reduced to a scatter of bright specks that read as dust caught in the light. Nothing is softened and nothing is dramatised by brushwork.

Qui-Gon stands upright at the centre-right in pale sand-coloured robes with a dark belt, his long hair loose over the shoulders. A red blade has come through him and stands out horizontally on the far side, with a small burst of white sparks where it enters. His arms are down. He is not braced, not falling, not reacting. The picture catches the half-second in which nothing has happened yet.

Maul is behind and to the left, a dark mass with only the horned crown and a slice of the red-and-black face legible, one further blade extending out to the left edge. He is deliberately given less definition than his opponent, which leaves the eye no choice but to return to the pale figure.

Down on the polished floor both of them appear again as soft inverted reflections, and a red conduit burns the full height of the left edge. Part of our Star Wars collection, next to the same act painted close, against a bare bulkhead and the duel in the palace above.
