Darth Nihilus Lord of Hunger — Print & Oil Painting

Most of this canvas is weather. A flat grey-blue fog is laid in with broad vertical strokes across the whole width, with no floor, no horizon and no source of light anywhere in it, and the figure has to hold the picture on his own.

He very nearly does not. The robes fall as one unbroken black mass from the shoulders to the bottom edge, with a mantle over them lined in a dull oxblood red that is the only warm note above the waist. Where the cloth meets the fog the edge has been left soft, so the silhouette never fully closes.

The mask is the one thing given hard drawing: bone pale, two black sockets, a narrow vertical stripe from crown to brow and red marks swept back across the cheeks. It sits high and small in the frame and pulls the eye straight to it.

Far to the left a dark spire leans out of the murk with a single red seam of light near its base. It is the only architecture in the image and it has been kept deliberately vague, painted at about a tenth of the detail given to the mask.

One straight red line enters from the lower left, held down and away from the body, throwing no light at all on the robe it passes. Painting him as a hole in the fog with a solid face is the accurate reading of the character: what survived Malachor V bound itself to the mask and the cloth in order to keep any shape at all.
