About this artwork
An extremely wide frame in which almost nothing is shown, and the restraint is the whole achievement. The canvas is a field of black and deep crimson, smeared vertically, with no floor, no wall and no horizon anywhere in it.
The mask floats a little left of centre and slightly high: small, pale, with the two black sockets and the red markings just legible. It is the only object in the picture that has been drawn rather than brushed.
Below and around it there is a suggestion of shoulders and a cowl, but the figure never separates from the ground it stands on. Where a silhouette would normally close, the artist has let the robe and the darkness share the same value, so the body is present as a slight thickening of the black and nothing more.
One red blade enters from the left edge as a clean horizontal streak at mid-height, and it is the only straight line on the canvas. Everything else is vertical smear and drifting stain.
The subject invites exactly this treatment. What is left of this Sith Lord is less a person than a gap. He survived a weapon that destroyed the world under him, and came back as an absence with an appetite. Painting him as a hole in a red fog is not stylisation but description.
