About this artwork
A dark chamber and a hologram the size of a wall. The picture is built on one enormous imbalance: a translucent blue head and shoulders occupies the entire upper right quarter of the canvas, hooded, the face rendered in fine horizontal scan lines. At the lower left, small, solid and black, Vader kneels.
The room around them is all vertical machinery: dark fluted columns, ranked fins and panels, and a scatter of tiny red and white indicator lights that recede into the depth of the space. None of it is described in detail. It exists to be tall and cold and to leave the transmission somewhere to hang.
The blue is the only light source in the picture and it is very heavily saturated against a near-black surround, so the whole canvas is effectively one colour and its absence. What that light touches, it touches faintly: the top of Vader's helmet, the edge of a column, a strip of floor. The hologram gives almost nothing back to the room.
Painted this way the image becomes a diagram of a chain of command. The one who is physically present is on one knee and takes up almost no space; the one who is not in the room at all fills a quarter of it.
