Darth Vader Stands with Arms Crossed in Shadow — Print & Oil Painting

Almost the entire canvas is black. The artist has lit the mask from high on the left with one cold source and allowed everything that source does not reach to disappear: no background, no floor, no edge to the room.

What survives the dark is worth listing. A long specular streak runs down the dome and along the flare of the left cheek. The eye lenses hold two small hard glints. The grille and the vertical teeth of the mouthpiece are picked out in cool grey, and below them the neck seal and the pale angular shoulder plates catch just enough light to place the shoulders.

Then the hands. The arms are folded across the chest, and the gloves are the most heavily worked passage in the picture, creased, cracked, faintly warm where the light rakes across the knuckles, the leather worn into ridges. More attention has gone into them than into the mask, and that is the decision that makes the image. The mask is a fixed object and cannot change expression, so the story has to be carried by the arms.

Folded arms are a posture of waiting rather than of threat. Painted this dark and this still, the figure is not advancing on anyone. He is standing in a room, and the room has been painted out.
