Darth Vader's Helmet Glints Amid Falling Snow — Print & Oil Painting

Two lights, two temperatures, one helmet. From the left a pale blue haze washes the mask and cools the brow and near cheek to gunmetal. From the right something red is burning: it lays a hot line down the far side of the dome, floods the right lens until it glows like a coal, and stains the outer edge of the grille.

The mask is painted close and nearly square to us, cropped at the top of the dome, so the two lights meet down the centre line of the face. The seam between them is kept soft: blue bleeds into red across the ridge of the nose rather than stopping at it.

White specks drift across the whole frame, thickest where the blue haze is brightest. Below the jaw the collar and the chest hardware come into view: a row of small red indicator squares and a linked band running across the chest, the only regular geometry in an image otherwise built entirely from curves.

Snow is an unusual thing to put on this particular surface. The suit is a sealed system that exists to keep the outside out, and giving it weather makes it briefly an object in the world rather than a symbol standing above it.
