About this artwork
There is no visible brushwork anywhere on this canvas. Every gradient has been blended to a polish, the way the great paperback and poster illustrators worked, and the result is a surface that behaves like enamel rather than paint. The mask is the proof: the dome carries a long unbroken highlight, the cheek flares hold a mirrored sheen, and the whole helmet reads as something chromed rather than moulded.
Below the jaw the figure keeps going pale. Neck seal, shoulder plates and the panelled chest box are all rendered in silver-blue rather than black, so the body dissolves upward into the same cold light as the smoke around it. Only the mouth grille and the lens sockets stay genuinely dark.
And then the company he is keeping. A scowling grey-green giant fills the upper left, brows knotted. A horned head with a long nose and a pointed ear leans in from the upper right, looking down at him. A beast with its jaws open and its teeth bared crowds the middle right, a pale rider flung across its back with one arm outstretched. More figures surface further down, a white-haired body crouched in the lower right and a maned face in the bottom corner, and none of them are given hard outlines. They are painted at the density of breath on glass.
Amber sparks are scattered across the whole height of the picture at several sizes, which is the one warm note in an image otherwise built from indigo, pewter and slate. They also do the depth work: the sharp ones sit in front of the mask, the soft ones behind it.
The arrangement is a wreath of faces around a face that cannot make one. Every creature here is emoting, snarling, staring, howling, while the object at the centre of them is a fixed mask incapable of any expression at all, which is what gives the picture its pressure. Part of our Star Wars collection, alongside the study of the same figure in a blood-red haze and the portrait where one face splits into the other.
