About this artwork
The theatrical sheet, painted in the old montage tradition: every element floats free on black, and the composition rises as a column of faces. Qui-Gon Jinn occupies the upper left at twice life size, grey-bearded and calm. Padmé Amidala answers him from the right in the crested headdress and painted face of the Queen of Naboo. Between them, small and lit from behind, stands the boy.
Anakin is the only full-length figure on the sheet, and the artist has made a point of his scale. He wears a coarse woven tunic and a wide belt, his hands hang empty at his sides, and he is painted smaller than any of the heads floating around him. Everyone else is a portrait; he is a person standing in a room.
The lower band collects the rest of the story in miniature. Obi-Wan appears at the right with the short padawan cut and a blue blade already lit; Jar Jar Binks leans in beyond him; R2-D2 sits at the lower left beside the unfinished protocol droid, still a bare skeleton of exposed wiring with no plating yet, and the mirror-finished royal starship of Naboo cuts a silver diagonal behind them.
Above all of it, filling the top of the sheet, is Darth Maul: horned, tattooed in red and black, the eyes a hot yellow. It is rendered larger than anything else in the picture and deliberately kept dim, so it registers a second after everything else. That is the correct order for a menace that the title only calls phantom.
