About this artwork
Of the three prequel sheets this is the one built as a romance. Padmé holds the centre, close to the picture plane and lit warmly, with Anakin directly behind her shoulder, his head tilted so the two faces almost touch. Everything else on the poster is arranged around that pairing rather than above it.
Behind them the artist has opened a rectangle of warm light in the black, like a window cut into the background, and it throws a soft halo around both heads. Obi-Wan appears at the right in profile, unbothered and slightly separate. Yoda sits low on the left under a hood. And between the couple and Obi-Wan, painted full-length and standing on his own, is Jango Fett in blue and silver armour with the jetpack squared across his back.
The bottom band is where the war is kept. A dusty ochre wash of ground, a line of clone troopers, the raised legs of a walker, all painted small and thin so they read as an event happening somewhere behind the portraits. R2-D2 and C-3PO stand at the right edge of that band, and a single blue blade runs down the far right of the sheet like a margin rule.
The composition states the film's two plots and their connection without a word of dialogue: a marriage that has to stay secret, and an army grown to order from the man in the armour. Jango Fett is the template the clones are copied from, which is why he is painted at full height between the lovers and their war.
