About this artwork
A vertical key art in the full seventies idiom: airbrushed faces, a black star field, and a cast stacked in a pyramid from the top of the sheet to the bottom rather than arranged in any believable space.
The apex is a helmet, ghosted and enormous, with a battle station under construction behind it and small fighters cutting past on both sides in tight formation. The value there is kept low so the whole upper third reads as one dark mass.
Below it, the young Jedi holds a blue blade upright in both hands, and the beam runs diagonally down through the middle of the sheet, splitting the composition and lighting the faces on either side of it. The smuggler is immediately beneath with a blaster raised; further down, the princess in a gold costume looks straight out, flanked by a slug-like crime lord and a bank of alien courtiers on the left and a small furred creature and a droid on the right.
The palette moves from deep blue and violet at the top to red-brown at the bottom, which lets the artist run two different scenes in one image without a visible join.
