Grogu Snacks on a Frog Amid Drifting Embers — Print & Oil Painting

A wide panoramic canvas with the child placed left of centre and everything else given over to warm dark air. He sits low in his coarse tan robe, both hands raised, and in them is a frog: long green limbs splayed, body twisted, mouth open, very much still in play. He is lifting it toward his own open mouth.

The face is the joke and the artist has timed it perfectly. The enormous dark eyes are turned out of the canvas, straight at the viewer, and the expression is not guilty in the slightest. Ears held wide and level, brow smooth, mouth already open, an animal caught mid-meal that has correctly concluded no one present is going to stop it.

Colour is held to a narrow warm scheme: cracked dark ground, deep brown air, a soft amber glow blooming behind him. Against that his skin reads pale green and slightly luminous, and the wispy hair over the ears catches a fine cool light. Two pale stones sit at the lower right, and the ground is drawn as dry plates of mud fitting loosely together.

Orange embers rise through the frame from edge to edge, at every depth and every one of them out of focus. They serve no narrative purpose whatever. They exist to fill the dark with warm floating specks, and they turn what would be a plain creature study into something closer to firelight.
