Rendered as close to photographic as the subject allows. Every wisp of hair on the crown of the head is separated, the skin has real translucency where the light passes through the ears, and the pink of the inner ear is the warmest note on the canvas.
Grogu is leaning forward over the rim of his pram with the shell open above him. The coarse woven robe is bunched under his chin. The composition is tight and low, taken at his own eye level, so the rim of the cradle crosses the bottom of the frame and the open hood arcs over the top.
The right hand is up and pushed toward the viewer, three fingers spread, held slightly out of focus because it is nearer the lens than the face is. That foreshortening is the whole picture. It is the gesture the character makes when he is about to do something he has no other way of explaining.
The eyes do the rest: very large, very dark, wet-looking, and aimed just past us rather than at us. Behind, the desert is thrown completely out of focus, brown haze and the soft ridge of distant hills, so nothing at all competes for attention.
