About this artwork
A near-square canvas, painted in visible oil strokes, with Han Solo standing in front of the Millennium Falcon and pointing his blaster straight out of the picture at the viewer. The arm is fully extended and slightly foreshortened, the barrel is dead centre, and the eye finds it before it finds the face.
The costume is exactly as it should be and painted without fuss: white shirt open at the collar, black waistcoat, dark trousers with the stripe down the outside seam, a wide belt and the holster slung low on the right thigh. His left arm is raised and back at shoulder height, holding something small between two fingers. The pose is theatrical and knows it.
Behind him the Falcon is described in cool blue-grey: the cockpit tube on the left with its bank of windows, the hull plating and the raised dish shapes on the right, all of it deliberately softened so that no panel line competes with the figure. The whole background is smoke and slate.
The handling is loose everywhere except the head. Brushwork stays visible in the shirt, the hull and the shadows, while the face is given real modelling: the light coming from the upper left across the cheekbone, the mouth caught between a threat and a joke. That is the correct place to spend the detail on this particular character.
