Kylo Ren's Crossguard Saber Crackling Amid Embers — Print & Oil Painting

Built like a screen print. Flat planes, hard borders, no gradient anywhere inside the figure, and a background made of torn slabs of colour rather than of a place. Nothing in the picture is trying to be a photograph.

Those slabs carry the temperature. Crimson and hot orange break across the top right, a bruised violet field occupies the left, black holds the centre, and the lower left corner crazes into a web of red lines like a crust over something molten. Dark flecks scatter across the upper third as though ash had blown against the picture plane and stuck.

The figure is turned three-quarters away, all long angular panels of near-black separated by hard grey edges: the cowl, the shoulder, the cloak breaking at the hip, a wide belt with a metal clasp. The helmet keeps its narrow silver band and the ribbed lines running back over the temple, and the eye slot is left as pure black.

The blade cuts the canvas horizontally, which none of the other paintings of this character in the collection do. It reaches from the hilt out past the left edge as a straight red bar with a white core, the two short quillons stab out sideways at the guard, and sparks spray from the point where all three meet.

That crossguard is not decoration. The weapon was assembled around a cracked crystal that cannot hold its own output, so the excess has to be vented sideways, which is why every version of it is drawn with a ragged edge and a spitting guard.
