About this artwork
A formal portrait painted almost entirely in blue. Obi-Wan stands three-quarters to the viewer in pale robes, the sabre ignited and held vertically up the right side of the canvas, and every surface in the image — cloth, skin, background — has been pushed towards the same cool register.
That monochrome discipline is the point. By refusing warm colour anywhere except the faint russet of the beard, the artist makes the painting feel less like an illustration and more like a memorial portrait: the kind of thing painted after the fact, from memory, in a single mood.
The blade runs from the bottom edge to the top of the frame in one unbroken vertical, dividing the canvas roughly at the golden ratio. It is drawn with a soft glow rather than a hard core, so it reads as light rather than as a prop, and it lifts the whole right-hand third of the image.
