Old Ben in mid-stride through a sandstorm, and the whole canvas is in motion. Robes stream out behind him, the cloak whips up to the right, and the artist has set the figure diagonally across the frame so that nothing in the picture sits square to anything else.
The sabre is the counter-line. It comes down from the upper left at a hard angle, held out and away from the body in one hand, and it is the only cold colour in an image otherwise made entirely of ochre and sand. Its light does not spill much — this is daylight, not darkness, so the blade reads as a bright object rather than a lamp.
The rock behind is barely resolved, painted in broad umber masses with the texture of the brush left visible. Dust hangs in the air as a pale scumble over everything, softening the edges of the robes and eating the horizon entirely.
