About this artwork
Two suns, a great deal of dust, and two silhouettes. The larger sun sits high and white-gold with a burning corona around it; the smaller hangs lower and to the right, a deep flat red. Between and below them the ground is a single dark band, and everything in the middle is atmosphere.
Rey stands turned three-quarters away from us, directly under the pale sun, hair gathered up, a length of cloth at her hip lifted by the wind. BB-8 sits to her right as a round dark shape with the head just breaking its circle. Neither figure is given a single interior detail: no face, no colour, no fabric texture. They are contours cut into a field of light.
The haze is the medium of the whole piece. It softens both suns into halos, flattens the distance to nothing, and makes the space between the two figures feel wide even though they stand a few paces apart. The palette runs from rose through amber to a dusty grey-violet, with no black in it anywhere except the two silhouettes.
Two suns in one sky is the oldest piece of shorthand the saga has, and it has always meant the same thing: a beginning, seen from a long way out, by someone standing at the edge of a desert with a droid for company.
