The dune is the subject. It sweeps up from the bottom left corner to the upper right in one long unbroken diagonal, its windward face combed into fine parallel ripples that get tighter as they recede, and it occupies more of the canvas than anything else. The painter has treated it as a landscape in its own right rather than as ground for the wreck to sit on.

The wreck is nose-down in the sand behind the crest and enormous. What faces us is the stern: three great circular engine bells at the right, ribbed inside and streaked with rust, and a fourth at the far left large enough to swallow a building, its interior ringed with structural spokes like the vault of a dome. The hull between them is scoured pale and pitted, and sand has drifted a long way up the lower plates.

One figure stands on the crest of the dune, dark against the metal, in wrapped tan cloth with a long staff held upright. She is perhaps a hundredth of the height of the engine mouth beside her. The painter has placed her precisely at the point where the diagonal of the dune meets the curve of the hull, which is the only reason she is findable at all.

Light does the rest. The sky is a hot white haze with soft cloud, the sun somewhere behind it, and everything is seen through enough suspended dust to lift the shadows and take the contrast out of the distance. The metal and the sand end up at nearly the same warm value, which is what makes the ship look like part of the geology.

Machines of that size came down here in numbers after a battle fought overhead, and the people who live on the planet now make their living crawling through them for parts. A figure with a staff walking up to an engine bell is not sightseeing. She is going to work.
