About this artwork
A screen-print in the poster tradition: flat colour, hard black linework, no soft modelling anywhere. Dozens of characters are packed edge to edge across the sheet, and the whole thing is split down the middle into two colour temperatures: cold green and teal on the left, hot red and magenta on the right.
The left column is the light side, read from the top down: Rey with her staff, Padmé Amidala in the Queen's crown, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Finn, Luke at the centre of the stack, then Leia, Han Solo, Lando, Chewbacca and R2-D2 at the foot. Every face is inked in the same dense hatching and tinted rather than lit, which gives the group the flatness of a printed sheet.
The right column answers it one for one: Kylo Ren hooded at the top, Palpatine below him with one hand reaching out of his sleeve, General Grievous and Count Dooku behind his shoulder, Darth Maul at the edge, Vader's mask picked out in yellow and orange at the centre, and then Boba Fett, a captain in mirror-chrome armour and a rank of stormtroopers, with C-3PO gold in the bottom corner.
What joins the two halves sits at the very bottom: a pair of hands closed around a lightsaber hilt, held vertically, from which the blades rise the full height of the sheet and cross near the top, one pale and one red, over a band of open starfield. It is a neat piece of design thinking. The composition is a diagram of the saga's only real subject, and the hands holding the hilt belong to no one in particular, which is the point.
