TIE fighter on Mustafar — Print & Oil Painting

This is a landscape painting that a machine happens to enter. Three quarters of the canvas is given to the country: a canyon system cut in terraces, molten channels running through it in bright yellow-orange veins, and flat-topped buttes standing at intervals into a haze that turns them lilac and then pale blue with distance.

The sky is the surprise. Rather than the black smoke the world is usually given, it is a soft rose and dove grey, with a wide pale disc low over the ridges and thin cloud drawn across it in long horizontal strokes. The heat is all underneath. The air above it is calm.

The fighter crosses the right half of the frame with both panels turned nearly flat toward us, so they read as two tall dark hexagons rather than as wings. Their inner faces catch the glow from below and go warm amber along the ribs. The spherical hull between them is lit hard from underneath, the viewport burns a small hot red, and the whole craft is angled slightly nose down.

The handling is broad throughout. Rock is laid in as flat opaque planes with a loaded brush, the lava is dragged in single strokes, and almost nothing carries a rendered edge except the ship itself. That difference in finish is what separates the vehicle from the world it is flying over.

Mustafar is a mining world before it is anything else, and the Empire kept its interests there long after the duel that made the place famous. From our Star Wars collection, beside the tower built above those same lava fields and the same class of fighter threading a range of misty mountains.
