About this artwork
A wide landscape divided into two unequal halves: a large dark shape advancing from the left, a small pale one holding its ground on the right. Vader comes in with the cape thrown up behind him and the red blade raised high above his head; Ahsoka is lower in the frame, braced on the slope with her back to us, both of her blades already out.
The ground carries most of the drama. It is broken black rock with molten orange running in every crack, embers lifting off the surface in loose drifts, and a bank of smoke closing off the horizon so there is no sky to escape into. The light is entirely bottom-up, which is why both figures are rimmed in fire along their undersides and lost in shadow above.
Scale is the artist's argument. He is painted nearly twice her height in the frame and given the whole upper left to move through; she occupies a small pocket of rock with the slope rising against her. Her two blades, one long and one short, burn pale blue-white, the only cool colour in the entire canvas, and they are aimed up at him rather than defended across her body.
The distance between the two figures is the point. He trained her; she left the Order before he fell, and the fight is between a man who no longer answers to the name she knew and a former padawan who is the only person in the picture with any reason to hope she is wrong about him.
