About this artwork
Airbrushed in the manner of a paperback cover from the early eighties, with soft gradients everywhere and the detail concentrated in a few square centimetres. The cave is built almost entirely from blue: cobalt in the shadows, a paler wash where mist crosses the roots, and a single shaft of cold light falling from the upper left.
The small figure stands on a low rock in the lower centre, and the rock is the only warm object in the picture, lit orange along its top edge so that it holds the eye exactly where the artist wants it.
The face carries all the finish. The skin is modelled in greens and greys with fine wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, the ears are pushed out wide and lit from behind, and the expression is level rather than strained. He wears a coarse robe with a rolled collar and holds a short gnarled stick in his lowered right hand.
Two arcs of blue-white energy leave him and curve away to the left and right of the frame in long ragged loops, drawn as thin bright lines with a soft halo, passing behind the roots and vanishing into the mist at both edges.
It should be said that this power belongs to the other side of the argument in the stories, where it is the signature of the Sith and never of this master. The piece is an invention rather than a scene, and it is worth looking at as one: the same face, the same stick, the same swamp, and a weapon he would never use.
