Yoda using Force against Darth Vader — Print & Oil Painting

The canvas is more than twice as wide as it is tall, and the two figures have been pushed to opposite ends of it. Between them lies nothing but standing water, low fog and a screen of pale trunks. Neither one is moving toward the other.

Yoda holds the right end. He stands on a mossy root with his blade lit and held close and upright, ears back, one hand thrown out over the water. Above that hand hangs a raft of splintered timber, a dozen heavy beams stacked and tilting in the air with smaller fragments already breaking away from the underside. Nothing supports any of it.

The far end is worked in another colour entirely. The dark figure stands ankle deep in the shallows, cape reaching the surface, blade angled down and touching the water so that the red runs out across the wet ground in a long smeared reflection. Behind him an Imperial shuttle lies wedged among the trees at a broken angle, one wing collapsed, a dull yellow light leaking out from underneath it.

Everything in the middle is teal. The trees are painted as pale vertical strips with no branches on them, mist covers the lower fifth of the frame, and the ground never quite declares where it begins. The only warmth and the only heat in the picture come from the two ignited weapons.

In the films this meeting never happens. The small master spent his exile deliberately out of reach, and the closest the films come to this meeting is a vision that Luke walks into inside a cave, on a swamp world that looks very much like this one.
