Two blades meet just below the centre of the canvas and the entire drawing is organised around that intersection. The great notched sword comes down from the upper left at forty-five degrees; the straight blade comes up from the lower right to catch it flat; behind the crossing, the blue kite shield is already turning to take the follow-through.

The beast doing the swinging fills the upper two thirds. Green hide, a red mane, two immense curved horns and a boar's jaw thrown open on yellow tusks, with a jewelled clasp at the throat and a red cloak behind. It is painted in loose scrubbed strokes so that the fur and the dust behind it are made of the same marks.

The rider gets a fraction of the space and nearly all of the detail: a bow slung across the back, a mailed sleeve, gauntlets laced at the wrist, the horse's cream mane whipping across the bottom edge. He is small, low in the frame, and he is not retreating.

White lightning is drawn straight over the top of everything in two hard forks, cutting across both figures without regard for depth, which pushes the whole image toward poster graphics.
