Zora Link Swims Toward a Glowing Water Temple — Print & Oil Painting

The waterline cuts the picture about a third of the way up and serves as the horizon of the whole composition. Below it, brown water and its reflections. Above it, a dark stone hall. He is in the water, and only his head and the top of his shoulders are in our half of the world.

What we can see of him is a smooth blue-teal skull with a long fin swept back off the crown and a pale collar at the neck, swimming directly away from us. The rings spreading out behind him are the only movement anywhere in the painting, and they are wide and slow rather than urgent.

Ahead, the far wall carries a pair of tall doors in cream and gold framed by two square pillars, with a circular medallion at their centre. A fall of white light comes down from a notch in the ceiling and breaks across the top of them, throwing a pale reflection all the way back along the water to him. He is swimming up his own path of light.

Everything else is deliberately closed in: black rock arches overhead, hanging roots and vines at both edges, low masses of dull red weed at the water's margin. It is a dark, low-contrast painting built around one small bright rectangle. Part of our Zelda collection.
