About this artwork
One gesture carries this painting. The figure stands on a rock ledge with the helmet held out at arm's length, away from the body and over the drop, fingers hooked through it. He is not putting it on and not looking at it. He is holding it out over a considerable height.
The head beneath is bare: a pale scarred scalp, the skin drawn tight and blotched over the bone, the ears missing. The lower face is still fitted with the breathing apparatus and the neck seal, so the machine has not been removed, only the part of it that made him unrecognisable.
The handling is soft and muted throughout, closer to gouache than to oil. Edges are allowed to melt, the cape falls in broad unfussy planes, and the armour is described with a few dark accents rather than detailed panel by panel. It is a picture that keeps its distance.
Warmth comes from below and behind. A chasm at the lower right glows orange, throwing a hot line up the inside of the cape and along the rock lip, while the cliff walls beyond rise in bands of ochre and dull gold into a hazy column of light. The overall key is deliberately gentle for a landscape made of molten rock.
What the artist has painted is a decision in progress. The helmet is off, the drop is right there, and the arm has not yet come back in. Part of our Star Wars collection, beside the same helmet long afterwards, broken and the fortress he built on ground like this.
