About this artwork
This is the same painting as its companion piece, cut down to a letterbox. The proportion is roughly two and a half to one, and what that crop does to the image is the reason to look at it separately.
Cropping has thrown away the floor. The bodies that filled the bottom of the taller version are gone completely, the ceiling is gone, and what remains is a horizontal band running from one wall of the corridor to the other. The figure is no longer standing in a room. He is wedged into a slot.
The troopers pay for it too. Two are pushed hard against the left edge, one against the right, each of them clipped by the frame so that no single soldier is shown whole. Only the central figure survives the crop intact, and the raised glowing hand now sits at the very top of the picture with nothing above it.
The trade is a fair one. The narrower band raises the brightness overall, closer to half than to a third, and reads far faster: two red bolts entering from the left, one from the right, a red blade low in the middle, and the hand burning at the top. It is the same information delivered as a headline rather than as a paragraph.
