About this artwork
Shot from the floor, looking up, which is the whole reason the image works. The viewer is at the height of the man who is already down, and Grievous is standing over both of us.
All four arms are out and all four are armed. The upper pair reach wide to the top corners of the frame, the lower pair drop to the sides, and the blades in them are not one colour but several, greens and blues crossing the canvas at four different angles. None of these weapons were built for him; each one is a receipt.
The body underneath is spidery and wrong on purpose: a narrow ribbed torso, the split shoulder plates opened out to make room for the extra limbs, thin jointed legs planted wide, and the pale mask tipped forward with its eyes lit yellow.
In the immediate foreground lies a clone trooper, helmet up, body slack across the rubble, with a second trooper's limb and a dropped rifle at the edges of the frame. The floor is inches deep in broken material, and behind everything the interior burns a hot orange through heavy smoke, which throws the whole figure into rim-lit silhouette.
The picture is unusually saturated for its subject, and the choice is right: this is one of the loudest canvases in the group, and its subject is a machine designed to be met in a corridor with no way past.
