General Grievous Towers Over Fallen Clone Troopers — Print & Oil Painting

The figure at the centre of this canvas is painted as a mass rather than as a body. Grievous stands with his cloak hanging in one unbroken black column from shoulder to ground, and out of that column two thin mechanical arms reach a very long way to left and right, each ending in a hilt with a blue blade lit. The head is small on top of all that weight: the bone-white mask, the two flared cheek plates, the eyes reduced to a pair of red slits.

Everything else is teal. Flat sea running to a bright horizon, a sky the same temperature as the water, wet black ground reflecting both. The artist has held the entire picture inside one colour and let the two blades supply the only pure light, which means the blue reads as cold rather than heroic. Far out over the water a loose scatter of small dark craft moves toward the shore.

The foreground is where the picture turns. A clone trooper lies on his back at the bottom of the frame, close enough that his chest plate and blue flashes are the sharpest-painted things in the canvas, one arm folded under him. A discarded helmet rests in the mud beside him. Further out, a second body lies half in the shallows. None of them are painted as tragedy; they are painted as terrain.

The blades are the quiet horror of the composition. Grievous built no lightsaber of his own: the ones in his hands were carried by Jedi who no longer need them, and he kept them the way another commander keeps decorations. Two blue blades, held by something that was never trained to use them and learned anyway.
